03.31.12
I finally got around to making my calendar for next month. Having a calendar is very necessary when you have two jobs with random start and end times, and I never feel like buying a calendar, so I make one in an old sketchbook. I realized that it's been a full year since I had started making my little calendar; it serves well as a journal, really. This time last year, I starting up a new job, changing locations in another, and preparing for a royal wedding. My to-do has stayed the same, but this time around I've added "Finish scholarship application" and "Find place to live in London". Who knows what I'll be adding to my to-do list next year?

scruggs

03.28.12

Bluegrass lost one of it's founding fathers today. I'm terrible at words, but Noam Pikelny (of Punch Brothers) summed it up quite nicely on Twitter:

"Earl Scruggs was the bedrock. His contributions to banjo & bluegrass are of such mythical proportions that he always seemed immortal to me. But the day has come- Earl has passed, leaving a legacy of music that that will delight and inspire for the ages. Mr. Scruggs, thank you."

I'm sure without him, I would not be enjoying the wonderful banjo music of today, nor would I have the pleasure of playing one of the greatest instruments of all time. I think a little Foggy Mountain Breakdown is in order this evening...

the first days of spring

Our first days of spring in Chicago have felt more like mid-August, which is refreshing, but I long for spring temperatures. But the heat hasn't stopped me from enjoying refreshing cocktails outside, lakeside walks, and wandering about barefoot. I've had my trusty F3 by my side, but unfortunately it's in desperate need of a cleaning, so a lot of pictures didn't come out (blerg). I hope y'all are enjoying the weather in whatever part of the world you're in.

03.19.12

Tonight Chris and I went on a little night-time adventure. I thought we were only going out for burgers, so I unfortunately didn't bring my camera. Not that I would've been able to perfectly capture the shining lights of downtown from Diversey Harbor. It felt like a true summer night adventure.

Time to re-introduced the world to my pasty white legs...in March. What.

st. patrick's

03.17.12

...Is the worst day ever. I've always kind of hated the holiday, but now I abhor it. The air conditioning was out at the 'Shop, so it was a humid 85 degrees in there; so there's me, running around like a mad woman, carrying mounds of clothes with jeans wrapped around my shoulders, add a bunch of drunk tourists wearing garish green clothing (one of my co-workers: "Everyone is wearing green and flip flops. Ew.") and you have my version of St. Patrick's day. Not to mention the ride on the bus to and from work, with a bunch of people who don't know how to use the bus (just because you pull the cord doesn't mean the bus immediately stops). So, I got home, changed into my PJ's at 5pm and had frozen chocolate covered pretzels for dinner. The day was (semi) saved.

yellow

03.16.12

Today was a pleasant shade of yellow. Just yellow enough that it reminded me of living in the rural country, where you know a storm was coming. It shined through my curtains and turned my apartment golden. It was short lived, but nice to know that Chicago is a real place. I need to be reminded sometimes, I think. I'm surrounded by concrete, lights, and noise so often that it was a nice break to see the city in such a peaceful way.

It's kind of amazing, really, how a plastic toy camera, a roll of film, and the perfect song can change your perception of a walk that you've made almost daily for the past year.
